Deep groove sounds, dim blue lighting, and a touch of suave sophistication filled the room of the music hall at the House of Blues. The audience, diverse in ethnicities and age, dressed to impress and ready to have a good time, stood waiting in anticipation for the 24-year old singer/songwriter extraordinaire, Ne-Yo. As we waited, the room resonated with smooth R&B hits of the past and present, reggae-inspired hip-hop, and the booming dirty south beats to warm up the concert-goers for the main event.
As the curtains opened, an energized crowd roared in applause, despite the fact that the show started nearly an hour after the intended show time. Donned in his signature black fedora hat, Ne-Yo, adorned with alluring back-up dancers, launched the evening with his dynamic performance of “Ain’t Thinking About You”. Upon my arrival, I have to admit I was a bit skeptical of how well the performance would turn out. Being that this was my first time to see Ne-Yo live, I imagined a bland, lackluster performer who would simply stand there and belt out tunes. To my surprise, this brilliant young singer had the audience in the palm of his hands. From his flawless voice, to his striking good looks, Ne-Yo captivated and delighted the entire audience and left them begging for more, time after time.
With several outfit changes and spirited interaction with the crowd throughout the performance, there was no getting tired of this amazing artist. Towards the middle of the show, Ne-Yo, along with Compound recording artist, Paula Campbell, wowed the spectators with a stunning rendition of “Leaving Tonight”. From time to time, Ne-Yo recounted the not-so-happy times of his life to help introduce the #1 hits, “So Sick” and “Because of You”. He conveyed such a strong understanding of pain and love which connected with the audience immensely. It felt as if you’d been re-introduced to a life-long friend.
If you ever have a chance to check out Ne-Yo live, I strongly urge you to do so. It’s an amazing show filled with laughter, passion, and not to mention a seemingly unblemished performer wise beyond his years. I think you would be pleasantly surprised.
