Loch Ness Terror
Title: Loch Ness Terror
Release Date: 04.15.2008
Studio: CineTel Films
Rating: 3 of 10
James Murphey is an Indiana Jones-style scientist looking for the Loch Ness monster because it killed his father when he was young. A mysteriously large and obvious monster pops up in Lake Superior, mysteriously killing random people for mysterious reasons, and then has babies. James goes through a series of highly complex and technical steps before killing it. Other stuff happens in between to make the movie longer.
There are a couple issues with the story line. The first is that the monster itself has a very short temper for a creature that has survived undetected for millennia. It appears, suddenly, and begins killing people in very flashy ways. It usually bites them in half and leaves part of them behind to be found by mystified authorities or hillbilly fishermen. The victims usually just stand frozen in terror before their deaths.
The second issue with the story is the sheer amount of absurdity surrounding James Murphy. He changes from a snotty little boy, in the opening scene, to a brooding tough-guy with a fetish for trench coats and cool hats. He carries several complicated and expensive-looking gadgets, which fail at crucial moments, to do a job that might better be accomplished with a stick of dynamite.
The special effects can be decent at times. The monster moves in a mostly natural way when it chases people. The interaction between CGI elements and actors is off, but not totally bad. Sadly, the use of CGI is inconsistent, and in some scenes the baby monsters are depicted by low-quality latex sock-puppets.
I'm not sure what to think about this movie. It is enjoyable because it is so bad and cliché. The characters lack development and basic problem-solving skills. Their actions and choices get irritating after a while, and eventually the predictable storyline loses its humorous appeal.
If you enjoy picking movies apart then you'll have plenty to keep you busy with this one. It's worth renting if you want something to fill an empty evening with senseless monster violence and silly weapons.
