Fort Collins, Colorado's Tickle Me Pink opened for Social Distortion in Denver and has steadily gained a following. Their bassist, Johnny Schou, was found dead of undetermined causes in his home the same day of the album's release, July 1st.
Given that their title song, "Madeline," is about a girl overdosing on drugs, while "Tomorrow's Ending" also approaches the subject of suicide, I found my heart sank when I read their 22-year-old bassist was found dead. The band plans to continue their tour in Johnny's memory, a task that I'm sure will be difficult, especially after reading some of their personal stories and the demons they've battled.
Madeline isn't an earth-shattering album for me, but it does have a few tunes that I find catchy and definitely marketable. "Typical" quickly has you moving to the music and enjoying the vocals. The angry lyrics come through in a song that I find hard to get out of my head. "Go Die" is another song I find has incredible hit potential and one I enjoy playing over and over. Other songs are not as memorable, yet they're still good, just not tunes that stick in my head. In the end, the question remains-would I buy this album? Based on the strength of both "Typical" and "Go Die," I have to say they are certainly worth the price. In time, other tracks may grow on me.
As an added bonus, the CD contains a live DVD concert. This bonus was a nice surprise and something that I'll happily watch on a rainy day when I'm in a mood for my own private concert.
