From the opening track "Make U Move," it is obvious that Danielia Cotton is not an artist that you will soon get out of your head. Cotton’s soulful, sultry vocal style and the strong beat of the tracks couple nicely to produce a wonderful album. Rare Child is Danielia Cotton’s second album, and I feel that there are many more to come.
As I said before, you’ll find yourself bobbing your head and singing along to many of these tracks. Even as I write this review, I’m still listening to "Testify" and bouncing in my chair. Rare Child does have its softer side, however. Soft and sad, really. Cotton’s slow songs are, as we’ve come to expect in ballads, about lost love. These tracks have strong melodies, and one in particular, "Didn’t U," shows off the full range of Cotton’s voice.
Danieilia Cotton has an amazing vocal range. She can sing so low that I had a hard time figuring out at times if it was her singing or a male tenor. Cotton can also hit the high notes though, so don’t get too comfortable.
Rare Child makes use of the normal range of instruments and the expected types of effects. It is hard to pin a style on Danielia Cotton, though. I’m tempted to say she is a delicate mix of pop, country, soul, and rock. Don’t be scared- it works for her. Very well.
I really only have one complaint about this album: some of the tracks sound a bit too similar, namely the CD’s title track, "Rare Child," and "Dark Desire." I found that the melody in the chorus of both songs could almost be swapped and nobody could tell the difference. This hardly affects the quality of the album; it’s still great, and I still love it.
