Want to know a secret? I never really got into Bush, Gavin Rossdale's former band. More commonly referred to as Mr. Gwen Stefani since their marriage, Rossdale's latest offering is a solo album recorded after a three-year break.
Now given that I never liked Bush, I will offer this. Today's Rossdale comes across as an extremely loving, family man with a very sexy voice, and I'm not sure Bush fans will enjoy the change as much as I did. Wanderlust is more of a pop-rock album than alternative. Songs lyrics are generally sweet, often oozing with tender romance like the line found in the second track, "Frontline"—"I miss my wife and family. They move heaven and earth for me."
Some songs remind me of Peter Gabriel's 1980s phase, especially the first track "Can't Stop the World." I'm not sure if it is the vocals or instruments, but I pick up a Gabriel influence. Most songs are enjoyable, but not memorable. I think that's my biggest problem with this album, I've listened to it a dozen times and only two songs really stick in my memory.
"Forever May You Run" is rather soft. Rossdale's vocals shine and are not overshadowed by the instruments. It is the final track, however, that truly mesmerizes me. "Beauty in the Beast" is simply haunting. Years ago, Benjamin Orr (the Cars) took my breathe away with a song titled "Skyline." It was a simple song, yet it held me entranced. "Beauty in the Beast" has the same effect. It's the one track on the album that I want to play over and over.
Summed up, Wanderlust isn't a bad album. It's just not going to be anything that I remember years from now. I was hoping it would grow on me over time, but short of those two tracks, the rest is just not that memorable.
